Archeologists in France say they've discovered a key to the spectacular collection of carvings dating back to prehistoric times.

They believe the collection rivals that of the world-famous cave paintings of Lascaux, also found in the same region as Dordogne.

The engravings are remarkably complete, and show the animals that would have roamed at the time. The carvings were made, well over 22,000 years ago.

They depict bison, horses, and rhinoceros. The carvings stretch across nearly a kilometer of cave walls.

Archeologists say it's an exceptional discovery and they believe the quality of the engravings proves the importance of the Cussac caves.

One image that baffles them is the depiction of a woman, which may be a sexual icon. The bones of five humans were also found and possibly date from 22,000 years ago.

However, because of the fragility of the engravings, the cave won't be open to the public for the foreseeable future, but there are plans for it to be shown on the Internet.
