Remember when the term "wireless" referred to that new fangle, AM radio? No? Me neither. Ask your grandfather. But today wireless ranges from making a call on your cell-phone, to connecting all your gadgets with Bluetooth Technology, even surfing the web on a PDA.

All that and more is part of a high-stakes industry gathering here in Las Vegas. No surprise wireless handsets nearly outnumbers slot machines when the CTIA, the Cellular Teller-Communications and Internet Association comes to Las Vegas, but these high rollers, after suffering through the high-tech bust, are optimistic that new toys and technology will attract new business.

There is a real trend that is developing. Wireless data is now here and it's alive.

Wireless data-like SMS Short Message Service, tapping a few words into your cell phone and zapping them into another cell-phone, kind of like passing notes in high school.

TOM WHEELER
June 2001, there were 30,000 SMS messages sent in all the United States for the whole month. Last June, June 2002, one year later, there was one billion SMS messages sent.

And wireless data like photos ("This little device goes here."), taken on your digital cell-phone.

TOM WHEELER
You are looking really good, James. Okay.
