Since 1945 Britain, like the other countries of the world, has had to adapt to a new international political and economic environment. 1945 年 以 后 的 英 国， 象 其 它 各 国 一 样， 不 得 不 改 变 策 略 以 适 应 新 的 政 治 经 济 形 势。

Before World War II, Britain ruled over a vast empire which covered a fifth of the world. 二 战 前、 大 英 帝 国 占 据 世 界 五 分 之 一 的 地 盘。

Europe at this time was divided into many independent nation-states. 欧 洲 当 时 则 分 裂 成 许 多 独 立 的 国 家。
