Almost everyone who has heard of London has heard of the term 'Cockney'. 几 乎 每 个 听 说 过 伦 敦 的 人 都 听 到 过 “伦 敦 佬” 这 个 词。

Strictly speaking, in order to call oneself a Cockney one should have been born 'within the sound of Bow bells', that is to say within the sound of the bells of the church of St Mary-le-Bow, which stands nearly in the centre of the City of London. 严 格 地 说， 一 个 真 正 的 “伦 敦 佬” 必 须 出 生 在 伦 敦 市 区， 即 伦 敦 市 中 心 的 圣 玛 丽 洛 大 教 堂 的 钟 声 所 及 之 处。

The average Cockney is distinguished by his quick wit, his ready sense of humour, his ability to 'carry on' under unusual or difficult conditions and by his willingness to be of help if he can. 他 们 大 多 以 机 智、 幽 默、 灵 活 善 变 和 乐 于 助 人 而 著 称。

The Cockney's humour is often satirical but it is never vicious; he is very ready to laugh at other people's peculiarities but he is equally ready to laugh at his own. “伦 敦 佬” 的 幽 默 通 常 是 无 恶 意 的 讽 刺， 他 时 刻 准 备 嘲 笑 别 人 的 奇 怪 之 举， 同 样 也 在 时 刻 自 嘲。
