第 45 课:There Are Pubs Everywhere 小 酒 馆-1

Owing to the uncertainty of the weather, out door cafes are not a feature of English life.

Their place is partly filled by what are colloquially known as 'pubs', public houses.

Here you can get any form of alcoholic drink, from beer to whisky, or nowadays soft drinks.

Many pubs also run some kind of snack bar that provides cold food such as sausages, ham, olives, salad, veal-and-ham pie, rolls and butter and sometimes hot pies or toasted sandwiches.

Everywhere there are plenty of pubs. A few old pubs have real character and a few new ones have a certain streamlined comfort, but many are dull and ugly, their walls decorated with dismal notices saying that no betting is allowed and no young person may be served with drinks.

It seems that the English think it rather indecent for people to drink alcoholic drinks in any place where they can be seen from outside; so pubs usually not only have no tables outside, but are so built that it is impossible for people outside to see in, or for those who are inside to see out.

There are a few exceptions to this, mostly in the south, but no many.

The traditional pub was a place for the men only. But things have changed, and more and more pubs are now places where men and women sit at tables.

Some pubs maintain the traditional division into two parts--a public bar and a saloon bar.

In the first there is often a dart board, and groups of friends will gather in the pub for a friendly match.

The loser may have to pay for a round! In the saloon bar your drinks cost a little more, but the atmosphere is quieter and there are perhaps fewer people.
