The American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, is believed to be the first person to use "hello" in the late 1800's, soon after the invention of the telephone. 据 说， 美 国 发 明 家 托 马 斯 · 阿 尔 瓦 · 爱 迪 生 是 第 一 个 使 用 哈 罗 的 人， 那 是 十 九 世 纪 末 叶 电 话 发 明 之 后 不 久 的 事。

Tom Edison, however, was a man of few words. He wasted no time. The first time he picked up the phone he did not ask if anyone was there. Then, someone thought that two syllables were too much and "hiyah" became "hi". Laziness is a strong force in changing language. 再 往 后， 有 人 觉 得 两 个 音 节 也 太 多 了， 就 把 “嗨 呀” 进 一 步 缩 简 为 “嗨”。 可 见， 偷 懒 是 促 使 语 言 变 化 的 强 大 因 素。
