A: I can't afford to go to a restaurant every day. Where can I buy food to cook in my apartment?

B: You can start at a supermarket. Most things you need can be found there, often at the lowest prices.

A: How much do you think I would spend on food in a month?

B: You should be able to do it on $100 a month.

A: That's good, because it looks as though I would have had to spend $300 in restaurants.

B: As you go into the supermarket, pick up a cart or basket and fill it with what you need as you go around the aisles. Notices tell you what's in each aisle.

A: Do you mean it's self-service? Do I just pick stuff off the shelves?

B: That's right. You can get other things, too, such as cleaning supplies, films and magazines.

A: They'll probably have most things I need.

B: There's also a frozen food section.

A: So I just take what I want.

B: Yes, then wheel the cart to the cash desk and put your purchases on the counter. The cashier checks it through and the computer recognizes the item and its price from the bar code.

A: Does the computer ever make a mistake?

B: No. The cashier could punch in the wrong amount, but it hardly ever happens.
