But Hans saw it was a trick, and said, "Tell the King to have a hare served tomorrow instead of today."

The servant was, however, unwilling to depart without the hare, and Hans said at last, "If the Princess will come herself I will give her a hare."

When the servant had gone the little man appeared again and asked Hans what he was doing.

"I am keeping watch over a hundred hares," was the answer, "and if I lose one I shall not be allowed to marry the Princess."

"Take this whistle," said the little man, "and if a hare escapes, whistle and it will come back instantly."

When the Princess came Hans gave her the hare and put it in a kerchief for her.

She had not carried it a hundred yards when Hans whistled, and the hare wriggled out of the handkerchief and ran back.

Before night came, Hans whistled again to see if all the hares were there, and then drove them to the castle.

The King was much surprised at this proof of Hans being able to look after a hundred hares without losing one.

Though he was reluctant to let Hans marry the princess, the king had to keep his promise.
